How to Measure Yourself for Couture (At Home, Without Professional Help)
Soft tape, mirror, fifteen minutes. The complete at-home measurement guide.
You can take all 22 of BLINI's required measurements at home in about 15 minutes. You need a soft tape measure (not a stiff carpenter's tape), a mirror, and ideally a friend. Wear close-fitting underwear; do not measure over thick clothing.
Bust
The fullest part of the bust, with the tape parallel to the floor. Do not pull tight — the tape should rest, not compress.
Underbust
Directly under the bust, again parallel to the floor. This is what bra sizing measures.
Waist
The narrowest part of your torso, usually 1–2 inches above the navel. Bend sideways — the natural crease shows you where the waist sits.
Hips
The fullest part, usually 7–9 inches below the waist. Tape parallel to the floor, no compression.
Shoulder Width
From the bony point at the top of one shoulder, across the back, to the bony point on the other. Measure from behind, with help.
Torso Length
From the base of the neck (back) down to the natural waist. Critical for proportional bodice fit.
Sleeve Length
From the shoulder bony point down to the wrist, with the arm slightly bent.
Hem (Floor Length)
Stand against a wall in the heels you will wear with the dress. Measure from the natural waist to the floor at the back of the foot.
